The pharmaceutical industry in Laos started late and is limited in scale, with domestic drug supply long relying on imports of quality generic medicines from China, India and other countries. In recent years, as Laos has increased its opening-up and introduced preferential policies, a number of pharmaceutical companies have chosen to set up factories here, and the industry has shown certain momentum. In 2026, Laos officially graduated from the Least Developed Country (LDC) status, and the drug registration standard was upgraded from the WHO prequalification pathway to ICH standards, with GMP requirements raised accordingly. The following is an overview of the major pharmaceutical companies currently operating in Laos.
Lucius Pharmaceuticals was established in 2020 and is located at No. 26, Thongmang Village, Xaythani District, Vientiane, the capital of Laos. The factory covers an area of approximately 210,000 square meters (other sources indicate 25,000 square meters) and currently produces over 200 generic drug varieties, covering multiple therapeutic areas including oncology, cardiovascular, diabetes, hematology, dermatology, men's health and anti-aging. As of June 2024, the company has obtained marketing authorizations for 54 anticancer drugs, including generic versions of targeted therapies such as sotorasib, osimertinib, cabozantinib and ivosidenib. Lucius Pharmaceuticals has obtained GMP certification from the Lao Ministry of Health, and its products are registered and approved by the Food and Drug Department of the Lao Ministry of Health, with legal production and sales qualifications. In terms of the market, the company has expanded its business to 12 countries, including Thailand, Indonesia, Cambodia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Japan and China.
Alliance Pharmaceutical was founded in 2017 and is a comprehensive pharmaceutical enterprise integrating R&D, production and sales, covering an area of about 80 mu (approximately 5.3 hectares) with 243 employees. As one of the three OTC pharmaceutical companies in Laos, the group holds about 27% of the Lao pharmaceutical market share and is currently the largest pharmaceutical company in Laos. The group is currently investing 1.5 billion RMB in a new plant, which is expected to achieve an annual output value of 5 billion RMB upon completion and is expected to become the largest pharmaceutical factory in Southeast Asia.
National Pharmaceutical Factory No. 2 was established in the 1970s and is a state-owned pharmaceutical enterprise directly under the Lao Ministry of Health, headquartered in Vientiane. The factory produces over 160 drug varieties, including infusions, injections, oral tablets, oral capsules, oral syrups, ointments, etc., covering 220 specifications, making it one of the pharmaceutical companies with the most complete range of drug types in Laos. In addition, there are other state-owned producers such as National Pharmaceutical Factory No. 3.
ASEAN (Laos) Pharmaceuticals and Food Co., Ltd. was established in 2012 and is the first pharmaceutical company in Laos to obtain GMP certification. The company currently has more than 50 approved drugs, covering multiple areas including oncology, chronic diseases and infectious diseases.
In addition to the above companies, there are also Element Pharma (established in 2019, located in the Boten Special Economic Zone), Lao-Viet Pharmaceutical Factory, KPN Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd., and several other enterprises.
Overall, the pharmaceutical industry in Laos is still in a development stage, with a limited number of factories. Private pharmaceutical companies represented by Lucius Pharmaceuticals are gradually expanding domestic and international markets, driving the industry forward.
