In rare cases, serious side effects may occur and require close vigilance. Rare (up to 1/1,000): severe allergic reactions, such as difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, wheezing, rapid heartbeat, pale and clammy skin, dizziness, or weakness. In these cases, emergency medical help is needed immediately. Acute pancreatitis, presenting as persistent severe abdominal pain radiating to the back, also requires urgent medical attention. Very rare (up to 1/10,000): non-arteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION), leading to painless vision loss or impairment. Additionally, intestinal obstruction has been reported with unknown frequency, characterized by severe constipation accompanied by abdominal pain, bloating, and vomiting. If any of the above symptoms occur, contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency care. Also, if you notice sudden or gradual deterioration of your vision, seek medical attention right away, as your doctor may arrange an eye exam and decide whether to discontinue treatment with this medication.
Like other medications, semaglutide may cause side effects, but not everyone experiences them. Very common side effects (occurring in more than 1 in 10 people) include: hypoglycemia when used with sulfonylureas or insulin, nausea, and diarrhea (the latter two usually resolve over time). Common side effects (occurring in up to 1 in 10 people) include: hypoglycemia when used with other oral antidiabetics (non-sulfonylureas or insulin), decreased appetite, dizziness, vomiting (more common at higher doses), abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, dyspepsia, gastritis, gastroesophageal reflux, flatulence, fatigue, elevated pancreatic enzymes, altered skin sensations, and headache. Uncommon side effects (occurring in up to 1 in 100 people) include: allergic reactions (rash, itching, urticaria), taste changes, increased heart rate, hiccups, delayed gastric emptying, gallstones, weight loss, etc.
Store semaglutide out of the reach and sight of children. Do not use after the expiry date marked "EXP" on the packaging. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month. Keep in the original package to protect from light and moisture, but no specific temperature requirements are needed. For expired or no longer needed medication, consult your pharmacist on proper disposal; do not flush down the toilet or throw into household waste.
