For patients with type 2 diabetes, a healthy lifestyle is just as important as medication. The American Diabetes Association recommends at least 30 minutes of physical activity at least 5 days per week (a total of 150 minutes per week). Exercise doesn't have to mean going to the gym—activities like walking the dog, working in the garden, or marching in place while watching TV all count as effective activity. Staying active helps control weight and helps insulin lower blood sugar more effectively. For diet, consume a variety of healthy foods including vegetables, whole grains, fruits, legumes, lean meats, poultry, and fish. Additionally, learning to manage stress is key—stress affects blood sugar and insulin levels. It is recommended to cope with stress through staying active, positive thinking, laughing, practicing yoga, and getting adequate sleep. If you have not reached your A1C goal after 3 months of adhering to the treatment plan, your doctor should consider adjusting the treatment regimen.
Semaglutide tablets should be stored at room temperature (68°F to 77°F, i.e., 20°C to 25°C), kept in the original bottle with the lid tightly closed until ready to take. Do not transfer the tablets to a pillbox or other container, as this may reduce efficacy. This medicine is packaged in a child-resistant bottle; keep it out of reach of children.
Regarding pregnancy: It is not known whether semaglutide will harm an unborn baby; women should stop taking the medication 2 months before planning a pregnancy. Regarding breastfeeding: It is not recommended to breastfeed during treatment. Regarding mechanism of action: Semaglutide is a GLP-1 (glucagon-like peptide-1) tablet that mimics the action of natural GLP-1 in the body, lowering blood sugar in three ways: stimulating the pancreas to release more insulin when blood sugar is high; preventing the liver from producing and releasing too much sugar; and slowing the rate at which food leaves the stomach after a meal. It is the first and only oral GLP-1 medication.
