When and how should you take Baloxavir marboxil (Xofluza)?

For flu treatment, you should take Baloxavir marboxil (Xofluza) as soon as possible within 48 hours after flu symptoms (such as fever, cough, sore throat, muscle aches) appear, and you only need to take it once (single dose). For flu prevention, you should take a single dose as soon as possible within 48 hours after close contact with a known or suspected flu patient. The earlier you take it, the better the effect. Baloxavir marboxil (Xofluza) tablets can be taken with or without food (i.e., regardless of eating), swallowed with a glass of water. This medication does not require multiple days of continuous dosing; a single dose completes the entire course, which greatly improves patient compliance.

Determining the dose of Baloxavir marboxil (Xofluza)

The dose of Baloxavir marboxil (Xofluza) depends entirely on the patient's body weight and does not need repeated adjustment. Specific rules are as follows: If your body weight is less than 20 kg (e.g., infants and toddlers), you should not use tablets, but instead use Baloxavir marboxil (Xofluza) oral suspension granules (please refer to the relevant instructions separately). If your body weight is 20 kg or more but less than 80 kg, the single dose is 40 mg, equivalent to taking one 40 mg Baloxavir marboxil (Xofluza) tablet. If your body weight is 80 kg or more, the single dose is 80 mg, i.e., taking one 80 mg Baloxavir marboxil (Xofluza) tablet. Please strictly follow the dose calculated by your doctor or pharmacist, and do not increase or decrease the dose on your own. The tablets are white to pale yellow, oblong film-coated tablets; the 40 mg tablet is debossed with "BXM40" on one side, and the 80 mg tablet is debossed with "BXM80" on one side.

What if you miss a dose or take an overdose?

If you forget to take Baloxavir marboxil (Xofluza) within the 48-hour window, you should take it as soon as possible. However, please note: For flu treatment, it must be taken within 48 hours after symptoms begin to be effective; if more than 48 hours have passed, the drug's effectiveness may be greatly reduced. At that point, consult your doctor about whether to continue taking the medication. For flu prevention, it must also be taken within 48 hours after exposure to a patient; taking it after the window may not effectively prevent infection. If you accidentally take an overdose of Baloxavir marboxil (Xofluza) (e.g., taking multiple tablets at once), contact your doctor or pharmacist immediately for guidance. There is currently no specific antidote; the doctor will provide symptomatic treatment based on your specific situation. Overall, as a single-dose medication, the risk of missing a dose or overdosing is relatively low, but caution is still needed.
