In May 2020, Selpercatinib received FDA approval as a breakthrough drug for the treatment of RET gene fusion and mutant cancers. It is especially suitable for adult and pediatric patients with non-small cell lung cancer, medullary thyroid cancer, and advanced thyroid cancer. Selpercatinib significantly slows tumor progression by inhibiting the activity of RET kinase.

What are the precautions for Selpercatinib?

Before taking Selpercatinib, it is important to understand the relevant medication precautions.

1. Risk of impaired wound healing

Selpercatinib should be discontinued for at least 7 days before planned surgery. Wait at least 2 weeks after major surgery and until the wound is completely healed. There are no clear data on whether it is safe to resume medication after wound healing.

2. Allergic reactions

If an allergic reaction occurs, the drug should be discontinued immediately and treated with corticosteroids. Once symptoms have resolved, a lower dose can be tried to resume the medication and gradually increase to the previous dose. If the allergic reaction recurs, permanent discontinuation of the drug should be considered.

Who is the special user of Selpercatinib?

The use of medications may vary for different populations, and the following are some precautions for special populations.

1. Patients with renal insufficiency

For patients with mild to severe renal insufficiency, there is usually no need to adjust the dose of Selpercatinib. However, these patients should be monitored regularly for renal function to ensure that the drug does not place an additional burden on the kidneys. If changes in renal function are present, treatment should be tailored to the specific situation.

2. Medication for the elderly

Older patients usually do not have specific clinical problems with Selpercatinib, but age may affect drug metabolism and excretion, and special attention should be paid to treatment. Treatment is carried out under the guidance of a doctor, and the dosage is adjusted according to the physical condition of the elderly patient.

What are the side effects of Selpercatinib medications?

Some of the side effects that may occur with the use of this drug are described below, and patients are asked to be aware of and monitor these symptoms.

Some patients may experience changes in taste that affect appetite. You can try different flavors of food or add seasonings to improve the eating experience.
