1. Recommended Assessments Before Initiating Cabergoline TreatmentBefore starting cabergoline treatment, assess for the presence of cardiac valvular disease, including performing an echocardiogram. If valvular disease is detected, do not administer cabergoline.
2. Recommended DosageThe recommended initial dose of cabergoline is 0.25 mg, taken orally twice a week. Adjust the dose by increasing the cabergoline dosage by 0.25 mg (taken orally twice a week) at intervals of no less than 4 weeks, until normal serum prolactin levels are achieved. The maximum recommended dose is 1 mg, taken orally twice a week. Cabergoline can be taken with food or on an empty stomach.
If cabergoline is discontinued, serum prolactin levels should be monitored regularly to determine if cabergoline treatment should be restarted.
